Kolkata, February 12: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condemned the murder of a migrant worker from Bengal in Pune, Maharashtra. She labeled the incident as a hate crime, asserting that hatred towards outsiders is being weaponized in certain states, targeting innocent individuals.

The Chief Minister expressed her deep sorrow and outrage by posting a video of the incident on her official X handle. In her post, she wrote, “I am beyond words, disturbed, angry, and hurt. Sukhen Mahato, a 24-year-old migrant worker from Bundwan in Purulia, who was the sole breadwinner for his family, was brutally murdered in Pune, Maharashtra.”

Banerjee stated, “This is a clear hate crime. A young man was targeted, tortured, and killed because of his language, identity, and roots. This is a result of an environment where xenophobia is weaponized.”

She demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and severe punishment for them. “I urge that the accused be arrested without delay and face stringent penalties. To Sukhen’s family, I want to say that all of Bengal stands with you in this time of immense sorrow. No effort will be spared in delivering justice,” she added.

This is not the first time Banerjee has raised concerns about attacks on Bengal’s migrant workers in other states, particularly in BJP-ruled areas. She has previously criticized the central government for the alleged persecution of Bengali-speaking individuals across the country.

Her comments came a day after the alleged murder of a migrant worker from Purulia district in Maharashtra. The Trinamool Congress leadership claims that Sukhen Mahato was killed because he spoke Bengali.

According to police and local sources, the deceased, Sukhen Mahato, was a resident of Bundwan in Purulia. His body was discovered on Wednesday afternoon in the Koregaon Bhima area under the jurisdiction of the Shikarpur police station. He was reportedly beaten to death for speaking in Bengali. His elder brother, Tulsiram Mahato, has filed a murder complaint at the Shikarpur police station.

Sukhen had been working as a migrant laborer in Pune since 2021. He was employed at a car parts manufacturing company in the Sanatbadi area near Koregaon Bhima. His body was recovered from that same locality.
