Kolkata, March 19: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a fierce attack on the Election Commission, alleging that it is taking unprecedented and alarming steps targeting the state.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Banerjee claimed that over 50 senior officials were abruptly and arbitrarily removed before the formal announcement of elections. This list includes the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP, ADG, IG, DIG, District Magistrates, and Superintendents of Police. She characterized this as not merely administrative action but a high-level political intervention.
Banerjee accused the Election Commission of politicizing institutions that should remain impartial, calling it a direct assault on the Constitution. She pointed out that while a flawed SIR process is reportedly ongoing, resulting in over 200 fatalities, the Commission’s behavior appears biased. The supplementary voter list has yet to be released, disregarding Supreme Court directives, which has created anxiety and confusion among citizens.
The Chief Minister further alleged that senior officials from crucial departments like IB, STF, and CID are being selectively removed and sent out of the state, aiming to weaken the administrative structure.
She also targeted the BJP, questioning why the party is so restless and repeatedly focusing on Bengal. Banerjee lamented that even 78 years after independence, it is unfortunate that people must stand in line to prove their citizenship.
She highlighted contradictions in the Election Commission’s decisions, noting that while it claims removed officials will not be assigned election duties, some were appointed as election observers within hours.
Banerjee raised concerns about the appointment of police commissioners in Siliguri and Bidhannagar without alternatives, leaving these key cities temporarily leaderless. Although this mistake was later rectified, she labeled it chaos, confusion, and incompetence, asserting that it is part of a calculated conspiracy to control Bengal through institutions.
She described the situation as an ‘undeclared emergency’ and conditions akin to ‘presidential rule.’ Banerjee stated that the BJP has failed to win the public’s trust, resorting instead to pressure, fear, and misuse of institutions to gain power. She expressed solidarity with state officials and their families, asserting that Bengal will never bow to fear. She declared, “Bengal will fight, resist, and thwart every conspiracy.”
