Mamata Banerjee Accuses Congress of Ignoring SIR Protests

Kolkata, April 1: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Congress party on Wednesday of failing to support her appeal for a united protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in the state and across the country.

She claimed that Congress did not take the SIR issue seriously and did not assist voters during the revision process. Speaking at an election rally in Nabagram, Murshidabad district, she stated, “I have repeatedly urged them to take action against SIR and to contact the Election Commission of India (ECI) together. However, they ignored our appeal. During the voter list revision, they showed no concern for the people. Only the grassroots agents of the Trinamool Congress stood by the voters.”

During her speech, the Chief Minister also accused the ECI of specifically targeting her constituency, Bhawanipur, in South Kolkata. She noted, “A significant number of voters’ names have been removed from the voter list in Bhawanipur. Nevertheless, I will fight, and in the end, victory will be mine.”

According to her, the ECI targeted minority, tribal, and backward class voters during the voter list revision process. She added, “There are also many Hindu voters whose names have been removed from the list.”

Without naming them directly, Banerjee also took a veiled jab at the Aam Aadmi Upliftment Party (AAUP), founded by former Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir. Additionally, she criticized the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) led by Asaduddin Owaisi. Both parties are contesting several assembly seats, particularly in areas with high minority populations.

She warned, “Some individuals will attempt to divide votes by making communal statements. Do not let a single vote be divided. This is the BJP’s game. They buy people with money. They distribute cash just before the elections.”

Banerjee also expressed concerns that some Trinamool Congress leaders might be arrested right before the voting. She remarked, “Perhaps that’s why the ECI has completely overhauled the police administration in the state. However, the Trinamool Congress will not bend. We know how to fight.”
