Washington, February 18: U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, announced that President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan has received unanimous support from the UN Security Council. He indicated that the U.S. is also poised to adopt a tougher stance against Iran.
In an interview with Hugh Hewitt on Salem News Channel, Waltz stated, “We passed it unanimously. The resolution was adopted 13-0.” He described this as a significant diplomatic achievement regarding one of the UN’s most contentious issues, the Israel-Palestine conflict.
According to Waltz, the framework will establish an international security force, create a Palestinian technocratic authority, and set up a special fund under the World Bank. He noted that Indonesia has publicly pledged to provide 8,000 troops and announced a $5 billion fund before the first ‘Board of Peace’ meeting.
Waltz mentioned that hostages have been released under this initiative, a ceasefire is in effect, and humanitarian aid is reaching those in need. The next phase of negotiations will focus on Hamas. He warned that they must surrender their weapons, either voluntarily or through force.
Waltz also claimed that countries that previously supported Hamas, such as Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt, are now aligning with the U.S. Israel is also part of this initiative.
Speaking on Iran, Waltz stated that the UN’s ‘snapback sanctions’ remain in effect, despite objections from Russia and, to some extent, China. He cautioned that countries engaging in trade with the Iranian regime would violate these sanctions.
He asserted that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps controls 40 to 50 percent of Iran’s economy, and the sanctions are impacting the regime’s financial stability.
Regarding actions against Iran’s so-called ‘ghost fleet,’ Waltz said that the U.S. has the right to seize ships under UN sanctions, although this issue is contentious. He advocated for strong measures through institutions like the International Maritime Organization.
On the unrest in Iran, he referenced data presented at the UN session, indicating that 18 people have died. He described this as a “widespread crackdown” by the regime against its own citizens. Prominent Iranian dissident Masih Alinejad was also present at the meeting.
When asked about timelines, Waltz stated that the U.S. has given Iran a clear choice: abandon uranium enrichment, long-range ballistic missiles, and support for terrorist networks.
