Major Ruling in 2004 Mukhtar Ansari Shooting Case: All Accused Acquitted

Lucknow, March 29: In a significant ruling, the MP MLA Court has acquitted all accused, including Brijesh Singh, in the 2004 shooting case involving Mukhtar Ansari and Krishnanand Rai. This decision comes nearly two decades after the incident that occurred in Lucknow. Mukhtar Ansari had filed an FIR against Krishnanand Rai and Brijesh Singh, accusing them of attempted murder and rioting.

The court found Brijesh Singh, Tribhuvan Singh, Sunil Rai, Anand Rai, and Ajay Singh, also known as Guddu, not guilty. Brijesh Singh was present during the court proceedings.

Romil Sagar Srivastava, Brijesh Singh’s lawyer, stated that Mukhtar Ansari had initially filed an FIR against Krishnanand Rai and 20 to 25 others. Both parties had registered cases against each other.

Following an investigation into Mukhtar Ansari’s FIR, the police filed charges against five individuals. Shortly after, Krishnanand Rai was murdered. A charge sheet was filed against Brijesh Singh, Tribhuvan Singh, Ajay Rai, and Ajay Singh, leading to a trial. Seven witnesses retracted their statements, while four provided testimony, which contained numerous inconsistencies.

The court reviewed the evidence and conducted a thorough trial before reaching its decision. It acquitted the accused due to a lack of evidence. All defendants maintained their innocence throughout the proceedings.

Varun Chandra, representing Brijesh Singh, remarked that after 22 years, a major verdict has emerged in this high-profile 2004 Cantt firing case. The MP MLA Court cleared all accused, including the main defendant Brijesh Singh, due to insufficient evidence. The court also exonerated Tribhuvan Singh, Sunil Rai, Anand Rai, and Ajay Singh.

This case dates back to January 13, 2004, when two rival gangs, Mukhtar Ansari and Krishnanand Rai, clashed at the Sadar railway crossing in the Cantt police station area, leading to a barrage of gunfire that instilled fear in the community. Following the incident, Mukhtar Ansari filed serious charges against Krishnanand Rai and Brijesh Singh.

Varun Chandra noted that after a prolonged legal battle, the court ultimately acquitted all accused due to a lack of substantial evidence. This ruling has once again brought this old and notable case into the spotlight. Both the defense and the accused are pleased with the verdict, as the defendants have been entangled in legal proceedings for the past 22 years.

It is important to note that on January 13, 2004, gunfire erupted between the two factions at the Sadar railway crossing. A year later, Krishnanand Rai was assassinated. In 2005, his convoy was shot at with 500 bullets, implicating Mukhtar Ansari in the attack, which resulted in the deaths of BJP legislator Krishnanand Rai and five others.
