New Delhi, March 25: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan convened a review meeting on Wednesday, focusing on strengthening fertilizer supply amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia. The meeting emphasized measures to curb black marketing and hoarding.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare stated that preparations for the upcoming Kharif season were also reviewed. The goal is to ensure that farmers receive timely access to fertilizers, seeds, and other essential resources.
The minister stressed that fertilizer supply must be consistent and uninterrupted across the country. He directed officials to expedite the ‘Farmer ID’ initiative to enhance transparency in the distribution system. Additionally, he announced plans to meet with state chief ministers and agriculture ministers for better coordination on this issue.
Chouhan also instructed strict action against those involved in the hoarding and black marketing of fertilizers and seeds, especially during a time when global crises could be exploited. He encouraged state governments to take decisive steps in this regard.
The meeting also reviewed the availability of gases necessary for agricultural chemicals and seed drying. Emphasis was placed on ensuring adequate packaging materials for milk and other agricultural products. The minister directed increased coordination with the Ministry of Petroleum and other departments to prevent supply disruptions.
A ‘Special Cell’ has been established for continuous monitoring of the agricultural sector, operating around the clock. This cell will provide weekly reports on the availability of fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides directly to the agriculture minister.
Chouhan urged officials to take an active role during this crisis, reaffirming the government’s commitment to delivering essential resources to farmers promptly. He noted that agricultural production in the country has increased by approximately 44% over the past decade, with many farmers seeing their incomes double. The central government is implementing various schemes to enhance farmers’ productivity and income, including record purchases at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
