Srinagar, April 7: A severe landslide in Ramban district has once again blocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Traffic department officials reported that the landslide occurred on Tuesday afternoon between the Digdol and Khuni Nala sections of National Highway 44, completely obstructing the road and halting vehicle movement.
Debris and large boulders rolled onto the highway, causing a total blockage.
To ensure public safety, traffic officials have immediately halted all movement on this busy highway.
Travelers are advised to refrain from using NH-44 until the cleanup is completed and the road is declared safe for vehicles.
Repairs are expected to commence soon, weather permitting.
This approximately 300-kilometer highway serves as a lifeline for the valley, as most essential goods are still transported through this route.
Despite the complete operation of rail connectivity between Jammu and the valley, LPG, petrol, diesel, kerosene, mutton, poultry products, and vegetables continue to be delivered via tankers and trucks.
The valley’s reliance on the highway will persist until freight trains begin transporting essential goods and seasonal fruits and agricultural products reach national markets.
Extensive renovations and upgrades, including the construction of new bridges, flyovers, and tunnels, have reduced travel time between Srinagar and Jammu from 10-12 hours to just 5 hours.
However, the highway remains highly susceptible to weather conditions, particularly the treacherous stretch from Ramsu to Ramban.
Frequent landslides and rockfalls due to rain often obstruct traffic on this route, leading to repair work that can take several days.
