Major Economic Transformation Expected in Mizoram Through Connectivity Projects: Study Committee

Aizawl, August 19: A study committee appointed by the state government has stated that the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) and the Barabi-Sairang railway link could significantly transform Mizoram’s economy and bring substantial changes to related sectors.

The impact study committee presented its final draft report to Chief Minister Lalduhoma. The 51.38-kilometer Barabi-Sairang railway line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, in Aizawl.

There are plans to extend this railway line southward by over 200 kilometers to Zorinpui, near the Myanmar border in southern Mizoram. This extension is expected to connect with the KMMTTP, ultimately linking Mizoram with Paletwa and the Sittwe port in Myanmar.

KMMTTP is anticipated to commence in 2027. Therefore, the committee has identified several areas that require immediate attention and preparation to maximize the benefits of these two major connectivity projects.

Lalduhoma praised the committee members for completing the report ahead of schedule. Initially given 12 months, the committee submitted its findings in just 10 months.

The meeting discussed the main findings of the report, particularly reviewing its status and field studies. The focus was on the current state and future prospects of cross-border trade between Mizoram and Myanmar, revenue collection and tax systems to benefit the state government, and measures to facilitate the export of Mizoram’s products to other parts of the country and international markets.

The committee noted that local traders and logistics service providers are already benefiting from existing trade and logistics activities. It suggested that local merchants could gain further advantages by mastering the Zokhawthar or Burmese languages, which would ease communication and trade across the border.

Additionally, the committee emphasized the need to raise awareness about security requirements and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Regarding the impact of railway connectivity, the committee stressed the importance of effectively implementing the ‘Inner Line Permit’ system once regular railway services commence in the state.

As part of its study, the committee visited Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and West Bengal to understand their experiences with major connectivity projects and assess socio-economic impacts. During these visits, the decision to establish an ‘Impact Study Committee’ immediately after the arrival of railway connectivity in Mizoram was commended.
