Aizawl, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Security forces in Mizoram and Manipur have made significant strides in combating drug trafficking, seizing methamphetamine tablets and heroin valued at more than ₹36 million. Five suspects were apprehended during these operations.
The Assam Rifles, acting on specific intelligence regarding the illegal transport of narcotics, collaborated with Mizoram police in a joint operation in the T-Junction areas of Mimbung-Kawlabem-Gopa in Saiha district. During this mission, authorities arrested a drug trafficker and confiscated 2.285 kilograms of methamphetamine tablets, estimated to be worth approximately ₹18.3 million. The arrested individual and the seized drugs were transferred to Ngopa police station for further investigation under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.
In another operation, a targeted mission was conducted at the Iron Gate in the border town of Jokhawthar based on reliable intelligence regarding drug trafficking. This area is known as a significant hub for illegal drug trade from Myanmar. The joint team captured another trafficker and recovered 28 grams of heroin, a highly dangerous substance, valued at around ₹560,000. This individual was also arrested, and both the drugs and the suspect were handed over to Jokhawthar police station for necessary legal proceedings under the NDPS Act.
These seizures highlight the Assam Rifles’ ongoing commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and ensuring the safety of the bordering population in Mizoram. An official statement emphasized that these successful operations reflect the operational capability, vigilance, and intelligence-driven approach of the Assam Rifles and Mizoram police in tackling drug trafficking and maintaining security in the region.
Furthermore, a joint team from the state police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Assam Rifles in Manipur’s Senapati district arrested two traffickers from Assam’s Goalpara district. They were found in possession of 2.3 kilograms of methamphetamine, packed in ten packets, valued at approximately ₹18 million. The arrested traffickers have been identified as Rohim Ali, 23, and Anwar Hussain Laskar, 48. During further investigation, a third accomplice, Mohammad Nawaz Khan, a resident of Mayai Leikai in Imphal, was also arrested. Authorities seized a Bolero vehicle and ₹5,000 in cash from them.
Mizoram and Manipur have emerged as major corridors for drug trafficking due to their long and open international borders with Myanmar and proximity to the Golden Triangle, one of the world’s key areas for illegal drug production. Mizoram shares nearly 910 kilometers of unfenced international border with Myanmar across six districts, while Manipur has five districts along the same border.
