Major Drug Bust in Mizoram: ₹19.21 Crore Worth of Meth Tablets Seized, Two Arrested

Aizawl, May 20: Mizoram police have made a significant breakthrough by seizing methamphetamine tablets valued at over ₹19.21 crore. Two alleged drug traffickers from Manipur were arrested in connection with this case.

Police officials reported that a white car traveling from Manipur to Aizawl was stopped near the Keifang junction in Saitual district based on suspicion. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered a large quantity of narcotics.

According to authorities, a total of 202,000 methamphetamine tablets, weighing 24.016 kilograms, were found hidden in 20 bundles. The estimated value of these drugs in the international market exceeds ₹19.21 crore.

The police revealed that the tablets were concealed beneath the spare tire in the back of the vehicle and wrapped in black polythene behind the mudguards on both sides.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Th. Onkhothang Haokip (33) and Matthew (46), residents of Chandel and Churachandpur districts in Manipur, respectively.

The vehicle used for trafficking the drugs has also been confiscated. Both suspects were apprehended at the scene.

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and further investigations are underway.

Officials noted that Mizoram has become a significant corridor for drug trafficking due to its long, unfenced international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Methamphetamine tablets, commonly referred to as ‘yaba’ or ‘party pills,’ are among the most trafficked drugs from Myanmar. These tablets, often called “crazy drugs,” contain a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine and are completely banned in India.

Authorities indicated that such illegal shipments are frequently trafficked through the districts of Champhai, Siaha, Longtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip in Mizoram.
