Major Drug Bust in Ahmedabad: 358 Bottles of Suspected Cough Syrup Seized, One Arrested

Ahmedabad, June 29: In a significant operation, the Ahmedabad Rural Police seized 358 bottles of suspected narcotic cough syrup from a pickup truck in the Aslali area. This action led to the arrest of one individual.

The police conducted the operation near the Satwa Arcade Complex on the Sarkhej-Dholka Road after receiving a tip-off about the illegal transportation of cough syrup.

Upon stopping the vehicle and conducting a search, officers discovered the 358 bottles of the suspected syrup. During the operation, police also confiscated a mobile phone valued at ₹5,000 and seized a vehicle worth approximately ₹300,000.

The total estimated value of the seized items is around ₹375,884. The arrested suspect has been identified as 36-year-old Khoda, also known as Rohit Thakor, a resident of the Bavla taluka in Ahmedabad and a professional driver.

Two other individuals, Jignesh Thakor and Ravi Pagi, have been named as wanted suspects, both hailing from the Bavla taluka.

A case has been registered against the accused under sections 8(c), 21(c), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985 at the Aslali police station. Authorities are investigating the source of the seized cough syrup and the intended recipients.

Earlier this year, police had also seized 273 bottles of narcotic cough syrup in the Bavla area, resulting in the arrest of another suspect and the recovery of vehicles and other items linked to illegal trade.

Additionally, the Ahmedabad Rural Police have conducted several joint raids in the Changodar and Sanand areas to combat the illegal sale of cough syrup, resulting in the recovery of substantial quantities of restricted materials and the detention of several suspects.

Officials report a rising trend in the misuse of codeine-containing cough syrup, particularly among youth. The police are committed to ongoing efforts to curb such illegal activities.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
