New Delhi, April 21: A significant defense agreement has been finalized concerning India’s leading battle tanks, the T-72 and T-90. On Tuesday, the Ministry of Defense announced a deal worth approximately ₹975 crore for the procurement of troll assemblies for these tanks.
The troll assembly will enhance the army’s ability to traverse minefields during combat. This crucial equipment neutralizes landmines laid in the path of tanks, creating a safe route for their movement. This defense contract aims to strengthen the self-reliance initiative of India.
The Ministry of Defense has signed important defense contracts worth around ₹975 crore to bolster the capabilities of the Indian Army. According to the ministry, these contracts pertain to the procurement of troll assemblies for the T-72 and T-90 tanks. The agreement was signed on April 21 in New Delhi, in the presence of Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, with Bharat Earth Movers Limited and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Private Limited.
The troll assembly is a vital military device developed by India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). It is mounted in front of tanks to create a safe passage through minefields. Notably, it is capable of neutralizing anti-tank mines equipped with proximity magnetic fuses.
Defense experts believe this will facilitate safe routes for tanks and other military vehicles during warfare. The integration of this new system is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Army.
Minefield areas are notoriously complex and hazardous. However, this advancement will improve the army’s ability to maneuver swiftly through dangerous terrains, aiding in achieving a strategic advantage on the battlefield.
This procurement falls under the ‘Buy Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured’ category, fully promoting domestic design, development, and manufacturing. This initiative is considered a major milestone towards enhancing self-reliance in the defense sector.
Furthermore, the ministry states that this project will generate new employment opportunities in the country, particularly benefiting micro, small, and medium enterprises involved in the manufacturing of various components of the troll assembly. This will increase both participation and capacity of domestic industries in defense production.
Experts assert that this initiative will not only modernize the combat capabilities of the Indian Army but also expedite the country’s goal of achieving self-reliance in defense production.
