Indore, June 24: The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Indore achieved a significant breakthrough on Wednesday by arresting a notorious thief involved in train robberies. During the operation, police recovered gold jewelry worth approximately ₹1.5 million, totaling 12 tolas.
Additional SP Hemant Chauhan of GRP Indore provided details about the arrest, the recovery of stolen jewelry, and the ongoing investigation. He explained that this action followed a complaint lodged on March 16, where a traveler reported that their purse was stolen while traveling from Ahmedabad to Indore by train. The complainant stated that 12 tolas of gold jewelry, along with their purse, cash, and mobile phone, were taken.
Based on this information, the police registered a case and initiated an investigation. Under the guidance of senior officials, a special team was formed. This team examined around 500 cameras installed at various railway stations and platforms, utilizing both technical and human resources to investigate the incident.
Through technical assistance, the suspect was identified as Jitendra Chawla, a resident of Ramnagar in Nainital. To locate the suspect, police shared his photograph with law enforcement agencies across different states. However, the criminal was quite cunning, frequently changing locations and using new phones to avoid detection.
Ultimately, the GRP Indore police succeeded in apprehending the elusive criminal. Authorities reported that the suspect has over 20 theft cases registered against him in various states, most of which occurred on moving trains.
SP Hemant Chauhan noted that the thief committed these crimes to fund his expensive hobbies, which included drinking premium alcohol, traveling to new places, and flying. He also mentioned that the suspect has completed education only up to the eighth grade.
