Lucknow, May 30: In a significant response to the collapse of a tin shed during construction at Charbagh Railway Station, railway authorities have imposed a hefty fine on the contractor. Northern Railway’s General Manager, Rajesh Pandey, reported that two passengers sustained minor injuries, while one employee suffered a fractured leg. Following an investigation, the contractor has been fined ₹50 lakh. Additionally, the site engineer has been suspended, and several employees have had their services terminated.
Rajesh Pandey stated that extensive redevelopment work is currently underway at Charbagh Railway Station. This project falls under Northern Railway but is being executed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), which previously managed the redevelopment of Gomti Nagar Railway Station.
He explained that some technical shortcomings emerged during the construction, leading to the collapse of a small section of the platform shed, referred to as the COP. In light of the incident, railway authorities have taken the matter seriously and initiated an investigation.
The General Manager emphasized that the railway will not compromise on passenger safety and the quality of construction work. The RLDA has confirmed that strict actions have been taken against the contractor and the agency involved, including the substantial fine of ₹50 lakh. Furthermore, the project site engineer has been suspended, and the services of PMC staff overseeing the project, including the supervising officer, have been terminated.
Rajesh Pandey remarked that the railway views this incident as a warning and will exercise heightened caution in future construction activities. He assured that passenger safety remains the top priority and that all necessary measures will be implemented to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
