Maharashtra Reduces Water Discharge from Ujni Dam Amid Decreasing Inflow

Pune, August 5: The Ujni Dam in Pune district, Maharashtra, has reduced its water discharge into the Bhima River due to a decrease in inflow. According to the dam management department, as of 7 AM on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, the discharge has been set at 100,000 cusecs. Previously, a higher volume of water was being released, but the decision to lower the discharge was made in light of the declining water flow.

The department indicated that if the inflow into the Ujni Dam continues to decrease in the coming days, further reductions in the discharge into the Bhima River may be necessary.

On Tuesday evening, increasing the water release from the Ujni Dam raised flood concerns for farmers living along the Bhima River in Pandharpur, Malshiras, and Mangalwedha talukas. Authorities have urged residents and farmers near the river to remain vigilant, considering the water levels.

Earlier, due to continuous monsoon rains, three major dams supplying water to Pune—Khadakwasla, Panshet, and Varasgaon—reached full capacity (100%). Consequently, water is being released in a controlled manner.

Other significant dams supplying water to the region are also nearing their maximum capacity. To manage water levels, 5,720 cusecs have been released from the Pavana Dam, while 6,200 cusecs have been released from the Mulshi Dam. Officials have advised residents living along the Mutha River and in low-lying areas to stay away from the riverbed and to follow government advisories during the water release.

On August 3, an official notice indicated that due to rapidly rising water levels at the Khadakwasla Dam, officials had to increase the discharge rate by 16,247 cusecs, resulting in a total discharge of 24,287 cusecs by noon. Authorities noted that further adjustments to the discharge rate could be made based on rainfall intensity and water flow.
