Mumbai, March 4: In response to the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, the Maharashtra government has initiated a high-priority mission to assist Indian tourists and professionals stranded in the Gulf region. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced this initiative during a session in the state assembly on Wednesday.
He stated that the state is collaborating with the central government to ensure the safety of its citizens. Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan has been assigned the official responsibility of overseeing rescue operations and providing immediate relief.
Fadnavis mentioned that a dedicated support system, diplomatic coordination, and community mobilization have been established. A WhatsApp helpline has been set up to provide real-time assistance. Minister Mahajan is in direct contact with those stranded via video calls to assess their situations. The state government is working closely with the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian embassies. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) regarding safety measures have been issued to citizens. Local ‘Marathi Mandals’ and other Indian community organizations in Gulf countries have been activated to provide ground-level support, including food and shelter.
The Chief Minister addressed specific issues faced by transit passengers in Kuwait, who are encountering visa-related problems. Efforts are ongoing to provide them with temporary accommodation and essential supplies.
Fadnavis noted that while some airspaces remain closed, Air India and other commercial airlines have gradually begun operations under safe conditions.
He emphasized that ensuring the safe return of citizens is a top priority. Although some airspaces are currently unsafe, arrangements for transportation will be made as routes open. Our protocol heads are also collaborating with embassies to facilitate the process.
