Mumbai, February 22: Senior leader of the Samajwadi Party, Abu Azmi, emphasized the significance of Ramadan for Muslims and urged the Maharashtra government to provide necessary concessions during this sacred month.

In a conversation in Mumbai, Azmi stated that he has requested the Chief Minister to allow religious concessions during Ramadan. He suggested that employees observing the fast and attending prayers should be permitted to leave work by 4 PM. Azmi pointed out that other governments have implemented similar measures and urged Maharashtra to consider this as well, given the importance of Ramadan in the Muslim community.

He also mentioned that the upcoming assembly session should allow for some leniency. Azmi referenced Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where government and semi-government employees receive time off until 4 PM during Ramadan, and called on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to adopt a similar policy in Maharashtra to provide relief for fasting employees.

On the topic of the film “The Kerala Story 2,” Azmi criticized it as false propaganda, asserting that concepts like ‘love jihad’ do not exist. He noted that individuals from different religions often marry each other and suggested that if there are concerns, laws should be enacted to prevent interfaith marriages. He condemned films that incite hatred and advocated for productions that promote unity and love among all communities. Azmi believes that the Supreme Court should take cognizance of such issues.

Regarding the requirement for parental consent for marriage in Gujarat, Azmi supported the decision, stating that it is appropriate for individuals to seek parental approval when getting married.

During the AI Summit, he commented on the Youth Congress protest, recalling Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia’s assertion that when streets are deserted, Parliament becomes aimless. He affirmed that everyone has the right to protest and criticized the excessive strictness in handling such demonstrations.
