Guwahati, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Salman Khurshid has raised concerns regarding recent changes to Form-6, questioning the Election Commission’s integrity. He stated that the commission made these changes unlawfully and only reversed them after Rahul Gandhi brought the issue to light. Khurshid emphasized that the Election Commission must clarify why these alterations were made in the first place.
Khurshid remarked, “Rahul Gandhi highlighted the Form-6 issue, prompting the Election Commission to revert to the old form. Therefore, it is essential to ask the Election Commission why it took Rahul Gandhi’s intervention for them to recognize this change.”
Supporting Rahul Gandhi’s assertion that those undermining democracy must face consequences, Khurshid stated, “Gandhi has made it clear that anyone, regardless of their position, will be held accountable for compromising India’s democracy. They will face punishment, and therefore, Gyanesh Kumar should be prepared for that.”
On the topic of Russian President Vladimir Putin praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to end the Ukraine war, Khurshid commented that such diplomatic niceties are common among world leaders. However, he stressed that the true value of these exchanges will only be realized when India successfully takes concrete steps to halt the conflict. “We have yet to stop the war; merely stating that we are trying is insufficient,” he added.
Khurshid also criticized the central government regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), questioning its validity when each state has its own distinct regulations. “Where is the UCC? Each state has a different code, so how can it be called uniform? It should be referred to as a State Civil Code,” he argued. He pointed out that laws in Assam do not apply in Himachal Pradesh, and vice versa, calling into question the legitimacy of labeling these varying laws as uniform.
He noted that wherever the UCC is being implemented, cases are being taken to the High Court. Furthermore, he mentioned the pending decision from a nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court related to the Sabarimala temple case, which could impact the UCC discussions.
Responding to the RSS’s statement about implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) nationwide, Khurshid asserted that it is not the RSS’s place to make such determinations. “They claim that the NRC will soon be enacted and that those who do not comply will be excluded. But how many from the RSS will actually be excluded? Who are they to decide who is Indian and who is not?” he questioned.
