MacBook Air Survives Direct Hit from Artillery Shrapnel, Still Powers On

A Ukrainian soldier from the Azov brigade shared images and a video of an Apple MacBook Air that was struck by artillery shrapnel but continued to function.

The soldier, using the handle @lanevychs on X, posted photos showing a 2020 M1 MacBook Air with a large hole in its aluminium body, caused by a fragment from an artillery shell. He humorously questioned the laptop’s “ballistic protection level” in his post.

The damage clearly indicates a high-speed impact, although the soldier did not specify the exact circumstances or the laptop’s position at the time. Despite the severe damage, the MacBook Air was still able to power on. The device’s display showed visible damage near the impact point but remained partially responsive.

The soldier mentioned that repairing the laptop would likely cost nearly as much as purchasing a new one. Apple’s MacBook Air features a unibody chassis made from recycled aluminium, designed for lightness and strength rather than impact resistance. The device is not intended or marketed to withstand such extreme conditions.

Similar incidents have been reported before. For instance, in 2017, a MacBook Pro reportedly stopped a bullet during the Fort Lauderdale airport shooting, drawing significant attention online.

Although rare and extreme, these cases demonstrate how consumer electronics can sometimes endure impacts well beyond their intended use.
