Kolkata, August 14 (Kiran News): A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has brought significant changes to the weather across West Bengal, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorms and rain in all districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, on Thursday. In North Bengal, a heavy rain alert has been issued for five districts, including Darjeeling.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, the low-pressure system over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify over the next two days and move towards the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts. Its impact may bring thunderstorms and rain to several areas of North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, and Jhargram on Friday, accompanied by winds blowing at 30–40 kmph.

Kolkata skies will remain mostly cloudy on Thursday, with light rain expected in several parts of the city. The probability of thunderstorms and rain in the next 24 hours remains high. On Thursday, the city’s minimum temperature was recorded at 26.2°C, while Wednesday’s maximum temperature stood at 32.5°C. In the past 24 hours, the city received 17.9 mm of rainfall.

Rain intensity is expected to decrease on Saturday, though scattered light rain with thunderstorms may occur in several districts, including Nadia, Murshidabad, and Birbhum. Rainfall is likely to reduce further on Sunday and Monday.

In North Bengal, a heavy rain alert is in place for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri on Thursday. Malda, North Dinajpur, and South Dinajpur are expected to see light to moderate rain. While rainfall may reduce slightly on Friday and Saturday, weather conditions are likely to change again from Sunday.

Continuous rain has increased the risk of landslides in the hilly areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Low-lying areas in Siliguri and nearby regions also face a risk of waterlogging. The IMD has advised residents in low-lying areas, underpasses, and riverbanks to remain alert. An advisory has also been issued for low visibility during heavy rain.
