Love on Two Wheels: A Journey from India to Sweden Premieres in New York

New York, August 21: A love story that began in the streets of India has now reached the shores of America. A young man took to cycling to reunite with his girlfriend, embarking on a remarkable journey from India to Sweden. This true story is the basis for the documentary “The Bicycle of Love,” which premiered in New York.

The documentary revolves around the lives of P.K. Mahanandia and Lotta von Schwedt. P.K. was born into a poor Dalit family and made a living by sketching portraits on the streets of Delhi at the age of 23. In 1977, a 19-year-old Swedish girl, Lotta, visited India. Their meeting changed their lives forever.

Lotta asked P.K. to create her portrait in Delhi, and this encounter gradually blossomed into love. Despite the language and cultural barriers, their bond deepened. Eventually, Lotta had to return to Sweden, presenting the couple with the challenge of maintaining their relationship across such a vast distance.

Determined to see Lotta again, P.K. decided to cycle from India to Sweden. He covered approximately 6,000 miles, or nearly 10,000 kilometers, passing through about a dozen countries before finally reuniting with his beloved in Sweden. This extraordinary journey is now featured in the documentary “The Bicycle of Love.”

Directed by Orlando von Einsiedel, known for works like “The White Helmets,” “Virunga,” and “The Lost Children,” the film premiered at the Directors Guild of America Theater in Manhattan, showcasing this inspiring story to American audiences.

P.K. and Lotta’s daughter, Emily Mahanandia von Schwedt, is also a producer of the film. She shared that the documentary is inspired by her parents’ love story. Instead of focusing on her father’s entire life, the director emphasized their love and the journey from India to Sweden.

Emily stated, “During the journey, the team had the opportunity to meet many people from different countries and cultures. Many of these conversations were spontaneous but later became crucial parts of the film. I believe that while people may speak different languages or come from different religions or cultures, the feeling of love connects everyone.”

Chirag Benedict Lobo plays P.K. Mahanandia in the film, while Meena portrays Lotta. Meena mentioned that filming took place in locations where the actual events occurred. The cast interacted with locals, and many scenes were created in real-time.

For Chirag Lobo, this experience was particularly special. He noted that many individuals featured in the film are real people, and the conversations he had with them prompted deep reflections on love, trust, forgiveness, and life.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas also joined as an executive producer for this documentary. According to the filmmakers, Priyanka was drawn to P.K. and Lotta’s story because it highlights love between people from two different countries and cultures. The production team includes Emily and her brother Karl Mahanandia von Schwedt, along with Harry Grace and Chloe Leland.
