New Delhi, June 12: Lieutenant General Rajeev Ghai, the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy), has been appointed as the new military advisor to the National Security Council Secretariat. This appointment makes him the first serving senior military officer to hold this position in the country. His selection is viewed as a significant step in enhancing the national security framework.
Previously, Lieutenant General Ghai served as the Director General of Military Operations. He played a crucial role in military operations during ‘Operation Sindoor’ last year, where Indian armed forces targeted several terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. During this operation, many terrorists were neutralized. Currently, he is serving as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy) at Army Headquarters.
Lieutenant General Ghai succeeds General N.S. Raja Subramani, who recently became the new Chief of Defense Staff after serving as the military advisor to the National Security Council Secretariat. The role of military advisor is considered vital for providing strategic counsel to the government on defense and security matters. This position offers military-related expert advice to the National Security Advisor and the national security apparatus.
Experts believe that Lieutenant General Ghai’s appointment comes at a crucial time when the country is advancing in military modernization, joint military structures, and strengthening the national security framework. His extensive operational and strategic experience while in active service is expected to benefit the National Security Council Secretariat significantly.
Notably, during Operation Sindoor, Lieutenant General Ghai played a pivotal role as the Director General of Military Operations. Following the successful execution of this operation, he was promoted to the position of Deputy Chief of Army Staff.
