Amethi, August 3 (H.S.): Panic that had gripped the villagers of Nevada Gram Sabha in Musafirkhana tehsil, Amethi, due to a leopard’s presence since Saturday afternoon, finally ended with the animal’s death late at night. The leopard had injured nearly half a dozen people, prompting a joint operation by the Forest Department, Police, and PAC. The leopard is believed to have died following an attack by buffaloes. With its death, the local residents heaved a sigh of relief.

Amethi District Magistrate Sanjay Chauhan stated that around 10 AM on Saturday, information was received about a wild animal attacking a villager. The SDM of Musafirkhana was immediately directed to verify the incident and take necessary action. Upon arrival and investigation, the Forest Department and SDM team confirmed that the wild animal was indeed a leopard.
The presence of the leopard in the village had caused fear and panic among the locals. A full-fledged rescue operation was launched. Expert teams were contacted in Lucknow and Bahraich for assistance. Although the Forest Department attempted to capture the leopard, it managed to escape into nearby forests.
However, around 5:30 AM on Sunday, it was reported that the leopard had attacked a buffalo shelter, during which it succumbed to injuries. A team from the Forest Department in Lucknow and the local veterinary team reached the site immediately. The cause of death will be confirmed after a postmortem.
Preliminary findings suggest the leopard had a head injury and swelling, indicating it may have been unable to hunt effectively and had therefore wandered into human-inhabited areas. It is believed that the leopard had lived in the surrounding forests for nearly 15 years without previously harming anyone.
After the postmortem, the leopard will be cremated at the Bhale Sultan Shaurya Vanasthali in Kadunala. A memorial titled “Ek Tha Bahadur” will also be established at the site in its memory.
