Guwahati, July 1: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called on the state’s residents to plant at least one tree during the Forest Festival. He emphasized that the active participation of every citizen is essential to make the state greener and to ensure a safe and improved environment for future generations.
On the occasion of the festival’s launch, the Chief Minister urged the public to dedicate themselves to the power of ‘people’s participation’ in nature conservation and expanding green spaces. He stated that if every individual joins this initiative, it will transform from a government program into a people’s movement.
In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister announced, “Today marks the beginning of the ‘Forest Festival,’ a week-long celebration of nature.” He encouraged everyone to plant at least one tree within the next week, saying, “Let us enhance the state’s green cover through the power of public participation and ensure a safe future for our children by planting a tree.”
The Chief Minister also shared his personal commitment to environmental protection. He mentioned that during his official trips outside Guwahati, he always plants a tree. “I make it a point to plant a tree on every trip outside Guwahati,” he noted.
He reiterated that the state government is fully committed to environmental conservation and large-scale tree planting initiatives. The Forest Festival is celebrated every year in the first week of July. It is a nationwide tree-planting campaign aimed at raising awareness about forests, biodiversity, and environmental protection. During this time, governments, educational institutions, NGOs, and citizens come together to engage in large-scale planting activities.
The Assam government has been actively running extensive tree planting and conservation programs in recent years. Additionally, significant steps have been taken to protect the state’s rich biodiversity and the natural habitats of wildlife. The government continues to emphasize increasing public participation in environmental conservation campaigns.
