Lebanon Appoints Former Ambassador to Lead Talks with Israel

Beirut, April 20: Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun has formed a high-level delegation to engage in potential talks with Israel, led by former ambassador Simon Karam.

According to a statement from the presidential office, the aim of the discussions is to “end hostilities, conclude the occupation, and deploy the army to internationally recognized borders.”

The statement also noted that U.S. President Donald Trump has intervened to facilitate a ceasefire and initiate dialogue.

It was clarified that these discussions will be distinct from any other negotiation processes. President Aoun emphasized, “We have two options—either continue the war or pursue a path of dialogue to establish stability.”

Meanwhile, the President met with U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, Michele Sison, to discuss measures for maintaining the ceasefire.

Aoun also stated that ongoing talks with Israel should be separated from the Iran conflict. He made it clear that the country faces two choices: either the war continues or a permanent solution is reached through dialogue.

Notably, last week, ambassadors from Lebanon and Israel met in Washington, marking the first bilateral meeting in over 40 years. This has provided new momentum to the negotiation process.

According to the President, talks may advance this week, although no specific dates have been confirmed. Lebanese media reports indicate that the first phase will involve discussions at the ambassador level, followed by a delegation led by Simon Karam in the second phase.

A ceasefire has been in effect between Israel and Lebanon since last Thursday, which is considered a significant step toward reducing regional tensions.
