Landslide in Shimla Raises Alarm Among Residents

Shimla, July 11: A severe landslide occurred early Saturday morning in the Bothwell area near Sanjauli College, causing panic among residents in Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. The incident has put several homes at risk. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties so far, but fear looms large in the community.

Local resident Poonam Chatak reported that the landslide began between 3 and 4 AM. Rocks continue to fall, and the ground is shifting, indicating that the landslide is still ongoing. All homes in the vicinity are in danger. So far, no officials from the administration have arrived at the scene. “We have contacted everyone, including the police. They did come, but only stayed for about five minutes before leaving. No action has been taken yet,” she said.

Another local resident recounted that stones and soil started to tumble down the hillside between 3 and 4 AM, threatening multiple homes. Despite notifying authorities several times, no concrete measures have been implemented.

Residents have expressed frustration, stating that they have attempted to reach out to local representatives, including councilors, legislators, and the mayor, but no one has answered their calls or visited the site. They are demanding immediate relief efforts from the district administration to ensure safety and prevent any further disasters.

Additionally, locals have accused the municipal corporation of permitting a private construction project in the area, which involved extensive excavation of the hillside.

This is not the first landslide in the area; a significant event occurred on June 28, 2025, when heavy debris and large boulders fell on residential homes, trapping several women and children. Residents are now fearful of a repeat of that disaster.
