Itanagar, August 24: The Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, K.T. Parnaik, has urged for stronger efforts to preserve the rich diversity of flora alongside developmental activities. He highlighted the state’s vast array of plant species, which includes over 5,000 flowering plants and nearly 600 orchid species.
The Governor noted that Arunachal Pradesh is home to more than 75 species of rhododendrons and hundreds of medicinal plants. He emphasized the need for concrete actions to protect these invaluable natural resources while fostering development.
On Sunday, the Director of the Botanical Survey of India (BSI), Kanad Das, met with Governor Parnaik at the Lok Bhawan in Itanagar. During their discussion, the Governor advocated for a dedicated program aimed at conserving rare, endangered, and threatened (RET) species. This initiative would involve collaboration with the forest department and local communities, focusing on GIS mapping, population monitoring, seed banking, and habitat restoration.
He also discussed the state’s rich biodiversity, particularly its remarkable plant diversity, ongoing conservation efforts, and future strategies to enhance plant protection in Arunachal Pradesh.
Governor Parnaik praised the regular discovery of new flora and fauna in Arunachal Pradesh, underscoring its status as one of the world’s richest biodiversity hotspots. He stressed the importance of protecting the state’s exceptional plant wealth through scientific research, sustainable livelihoods, community involvement, and long-term ecological security.
Furthermore, he highlighted the need for extensive botanical surveys in the state’s remote and less-explored areas, particularly those that have been inaccessible due to poor road connectivity in the past. He suggested deploying more scientific personnel for systematic documentation and research.
