Kolkata Metro Introduces QR Code Ticketing for Seamless Travel

Kolkata Metro enhances travel convenience with QR code ticketing, easing access during the busy Durga Puja festival.

Kolkata, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Starting Wednesday, October 14, 2026, traveling on the Kolkata Metro has become significantly easier thanks to two new initiatives announced by officials.

Metro passengers will no longer need to download an app to purchase tickets. This feature has been rolled out at select stations and will soon be available at more locations.

A senior official from the Metro Railway explained that travelers can now scan QR code stickers available at metro stations to buy tickets without any app. This service is currently offered at Esplanade, Dum Dum, Dakshineswar Rabindra Sarovar, Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, Kalighat, Howrah, Sealdah, Shovabazar-Sutanuti, Salt Lake Sector Five, and Dum Dum Cantonment stations. Additional stations across all corridors will adopt this feature shortly.

This new system is expected to be a significant relief for those using the metro during the Durga Puja festival. Many visitors, who do not regularly use the metro, may not have downloaded the ‘Amar Kolkata Metro’ app or possess smart cards. Now, they can avoid long queues at booking counters.

In anticipation of the heavy crowds during Durga Puja, the metro will operate all-night services on its Blue and Green lines for three consecutive days. The launch of this initiative was conducted by Metro Railway General Manager Prem Sagar Gupta at Park Street station.

Additionally, passengers can purchase tickets to their destinations using the Paytm app, alongside the ‘Amar Kolkata Metro’ app. The Chief Operating Officer of Paytm was present at the launch event. Gupta emphasized that these new features will allow passengers to buy tickets quickly and easily, saving them valuable time.

To ensure passenger safety during Durga Puja, extensive plans have been put in place. Special attention will be given to the safety of female travelers. Coordination meetings have been held among Kolkata Police, Railway Protection Force (RPF), and Metro Railway Police.

An official mentioned that specialized anti-sabotage teams equipped with advanced tools and sniffer dogs will be deployed. Moreover, RPF personnel, both male and female, will conduct regular patrols to prevent any form of harassment against women. Any attempts at misconduct will not be tolerated, and these teams will also travel on trains.

Live CCTV footage will be closely monitored in security control rooms. Strategic locations will have specialized technical teams ready to address any technical issues. The metro aims to minimize crowding at stations caused by service disruptions.
