New Delhi, August 1: As August 2026 begins, several significant financial changes affecting the general public, taxpayers, bank customers, and travelers have come into effect. This month marks the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR), the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, changes in railway immediate ticket booking rules, new prices for commercial LPG cylinders, and revisions to debit and credit card regulations by various banks. Let’s explore how these financial changes may impact your wallet this August.
The most crucial financial update for August is the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR). Taxpayers filing ITR-3 or ITR-4, who are not subject to tax audits, must submit their returns by August 31, 2026. This includes self-employed professionals, freelancers, small business owners, and those opting for presumptive taxation schemes under Sections 44AD and 44ADA of the Income Tax Act. Failure to file the return on time may incur a penalty of up to ₹5,000 under Section 234F. Additionally, if there are outstanding taxes, interest may also be applicable under Section 234A.
Furthermore, the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will convene from August 3 to August 5, with policy decisions announced on August 5. While significant regulatory changes are not expected immediately after this meeting, the RBI’s stance on repo rates, interest rates, and liquidity could influence home loan EMIs, bank loans, and fixed deposit (FD) interest rates in the near future.
Starting August 1, Indian Railways has implemented a token system for immediate ticket booking at reservation counters. This initiative aims to streamline the ticket booking process and reduce crowding at counters. Additionally, a new digital service launched last Friday allows passengers to book and pay for extra luggage online while purchasing their train tickets, eliminating the need to visit a separate parcel office.
State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) have reduced the prices of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders by over ₹200. According to the new rates, the commercial cylinder price has decreased by ₹202 in Delhi and ₹209 in Kolkata, effective from August 1. However, there are no changes to the prices of 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders used by household consumers.
Axis Bank has announced changes to the benefits associated with its premium Burgundy Magnus credit card. Starting August 28, the dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fee will increase from 1.5% to 2%. Additionally, reward points for toll payments and gift card purchases will be discontinued, and there will be changes to the rules regarding priority pass access to domestic airport lounges.
Moreover, the eligibility for complimentary insurance coverage on the Axis Bank Prestige debit card has also changed. Customers must now perform at least one eligible debit card transaction 30 days prior to an insurance event to qualify for benefits, a reduction from the previous requirement of 90 days. Starting August 28, the DCC fee on Axis Bank debit cards will rise from 1.5% to 3.5%.
Kotak Mahindra Bank has also increased the DCC fee on its debit cards from August 1, 2026. Customers will now incur a charge of 3.5% + GST for transactions processed by international merchants or abroad, up from the previous fee of 1% + GST.
Additionally, several banks have revised their banking service fees. Ujjivan Small Finance Bank has adjusted its SMS alert fee to ₹0.30 per message, with a monthly limit in place. Customers are advised to check with their banks regarding annual maintenance fees, transaction fees, and other changes in banking services.
Experts suggest that these changes implemented in August could affect tax compliance, banking costs, investment decisions, and travel plans. Staying informed about these new regulations is essential to avoid extra charges, penalties, and inconveniences.
