Minor Earthquake Strikes Hingoli, Maharashtra with Magnitude of 2.9

A minor earthquake measuring 2.9 struck Hingoli, Maharashtra, early Thursday morning, causing brief alarm but no reported damage.

Hingoli, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : A minor earthquake shook Hingoli district in Maharashtra early Thursday morning. The tremor, recorded at a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale, occurred at 4:58 AM. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) announced the details via social media.

The epicenter of the quake was located in Hingoli, with coordinates of 19.498° N latitude and 77.217° E longitude. It struck at a depth of 5 kilometers. This follows another tremor felt in the same district on October 3, which registered a magnitude of 3.3 and was centered about 7 kilometers deep near the village of Gadhal.

Residents experienced a moment of fear following the recent quake, but fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or damage. Hingoli has been experiencing a series of minor tremors in recent days. A similar light earthquake was felt in the area in July, also without significant impact due to its low intensity.

Previously, on September 26, another earthquake was recorded in Palghar district, measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale, occurring at a depth of approximately 5 kilometers.

Hingoli is situated close to significant geological fault lines, such as the Kinnerasari Godavari Fault (KGF). The tectonic stress that builds up in the rocks beneath these fault lines can lead to frequent seismic activity. Most earthquakes in the Hingoli area are shallow, occurring at depths of 5 to 10 kilometers, which allows even lower magnitude tremors (ranging from 2.5 to 4.7) to be felt strongly at the surface.

The region has been experiencing a phenomenon known as an “earthquake swarm,” characterized by a series of small to moderate tremors occurring within a short time frame without a single major quake.
