San Francisco, April 6: Alperen Sengun made a crucial layup with just 11 seconds remaining, assisted by Kevin Durant, as the Houston Rockets edged out the Golden State Warriors 117-116 on Sunday night. This game marked Stephen Curry’s return after a two-month absence due to a knee injury.
Curry attempted a long 3-pointer in the final moments but missed, sealing the Rockets’ victory.
Gary Payton II had previously scored a go-ahead basket following a goaltend by Amen Thompson with 20 seconds left. However, Durant responded decisively, finishing the game with 31 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists against his former team. He hit a vital 3-pointer with 2:10 left on the clock.
Despite a missed shot with 38 seconds remaining, Draymond Green found Payton cutting to the basket. Curry, who dazzled throughout the game, scored 29 points on 11-for-21 shooting in just 26 minutes. This was his first game since January 30 against Detroit, after missing 27 consecutive games.
Curry’s driving layup narrowed the score to one point with 1:27 left, but Sengun quickly converted a three-point play. Curry then responded with a 3-pointer on the other end.
Upon his return, Curry received a warm standing ovation and expressed gratitude on the big screen. This game marked the first time he came off the bench in a regular-season match since March 7, 2012.
Tensions flared briefly in the second quarter when Green and Jabari Smith Jr. exchanged words and had to be separated. Smith finished with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Sengun added 24 points and Thompson contributed 18 points along with seven assists.
In a historic moment, Curry and his younger brother Seth played together for the first time, marking a significant milestone in Warriors franchise history. Seth previously appeared in six preseason games for Golden State in 2013 but had limited playtime alongside Stephen.
