Keralas Election Campaign Gains Momentum During Eid Celebrations

Thiruvananthapuram, March 20: This year, Eid falls on a Friday, transforming Kerala’s election campaign into a vibrant and politically charged atmosphere. With assembly elections scheduled for April 9, candidates from all major political parties gathered at Eidgah grounds to connect with voters in the final push of their campaigns.

As the end of the election campaign approaches, candidates from the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front, the Congress-led United Democratic Front, and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance were seen heading to Eidgah grounds across the state early in the morning.

Syed Sadik Ali Shihab Thangal, a prominent leader of the Indian Union Muslim League, was spotted heading to the prayer site alongside senior leader P.K. Kunhalikutty, who is contesting from the Malappuram constituency. Many media personnel were waiting to speak with him.

Thangal stated, “The situation is challenging for us, and in the coming days, as the campaigning intensifies, we will be even more excited because the results are quite clear.”

Candidates arrived before the prayers concluded, patiently waiting on the sidelines to greet worshippers. Handshakes, brief conversations, and quick appeals for support characterized these interactions, as candidates aimed to enhance their visibility among crucial voter demographics in a limited timeframe.

The Muslim population in Kerala constitutes about 24 percent of the state’s approximately 33 million residents. In several constituencies, particularly in Malabar and central Kerala, they remain a significant electoral group.

This festive gathering provided a rare opportunity to connect with a large number of voters in one place, which is often challenging so close to election day.

In many locations, Muslim candidates transcended political differences by participating in Eid prayers, blending religious observance with subtle political signals.

For many, it was also a chance to strengthen community ties and highlight their cultural connections.

While the sanctity of the occasion was preserved, a palpable wave of electoral seriousness was also evident.

As the campaign enters its final phase of door-to-door outreach and public meetings, Eid ul-Fitr has become not just a celebration but a strategic milestone where faith, festivity, and politics converge in the high-stakes final stretch of the electoral battle.
