Thiruvananthapuram, March 18: Ahead of the Kerala Assembly elections, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Kerala Congress (Joseph), allies of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), released significant portions of their candidate lists on Tuesday. These lists reflect a clear strategy for generational change and strengthening social foundations.
Voting for the 140-member Kerala Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with counting set for May 4.
The IUML has announced 25 candidates. A notable decision is the nomination of Jayanti Rajan from the Kutupuramba seat in Kannur district, marking a shift as she is a Hindu woman. This move is viewed as an attempt to expand the party’s social base beyond its traditional voter bank.
Senior leader M.K. Munir has not been given a ticket this time due to health reasons.
In a significant change, P.K. Kunhalikutty will contest from Malappuram instead of his traditional Vengara seat, with K.M. Shaji nominated from Vengara.
Other prominent candidates include Faisal Babu (Kozhikode South), Fatima Tehlia (Perambra), Razak Master (Kunnamangalam), and Rahmatullah (Manjeri), showcasing a balance of experience and new faces.
Anwar Naha, brother of former minister Abdurrabb, has been given a ticket from Tirurangadi. Several incumbents will retain their seats, such as C.K. Kasim contesting from Tiruvambadi.
Additional candidates include Parakkal Abdullah (Kuttiyadi), A.K.M. Ashraf (Manjeshwaram), Abid Hussain Thangal (Kottakkal), N. Shamsudeen (Mannarkkad), and V.E. Abdul Gafoor (Kalamasery). Candidates for the Punalur and Chelakkara seats will be announced later.
Meanwhile, the Kerala Congress (Joseph) has announced its candidates for the eight seats allocated by Congress. The most significant decision came from party president P.J. Joseph, who left the Thodupuzha seat for his son Appu John Joseph, signaling a generational shift within the party.
The lists from both parties indicate that the UDF aims to balance tradition and change as it moves forward in the upcoming elections.
