Kochi, March 6: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar is on a tour of Kerala to review preparations for the upcoming 2026 state assembly elections. On Friday morning, he visited the Goshri Bridge area in Kochi, where he administered the ‘Voter’s Pledge’ to young voters, encouraging them to engage more actively in the democratic process.
The Election Commission of India reported that CEC Gyanesh Kumar participated in awareness programs with young voters in Kochi. He led the ‘Voter’s Pledge’ initiative near Goshri Bridge, motivating the youth to take part in the electoral process. Additionally, he walked along Goshri Bridge with the young voters.
During his visit, the CEC also launched the ‘Gen-Z Anthem’ and observed ongoing voter awareness campaigns while interacting with the youth.
A delegation from the Election Commission, led by Gyanesh Kumar, arrived in Kerala on Thursday. This team included Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. On Thursday, they reviewed election preparations by visiting the Durbar Hall Ground in Kochi and meeting with officials to assess the arrangements.
The commission will hold meetings with representatives of political parties and senior officials on March 6 and 7.
Upon arriving in Kochi, Gyanesh Kumar shared fond memories of the region. He is a 1988 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Kerala cadre and served as the District Collector of Ernakulam from June 2001 to July 2004. Expressing his joy at returning after nearly 22 years, he stated, “I want to tell the people of Ernakulam that after serving as Collector for 22 years, I am back here again.”
It is noteworthy that the term of the 140-member Kerala assembly will conclude in May, necessitating elections in the state. Currently, the government is led by Pinarayi Vijayan, who will face challenges from Congress and BJP in the upcoming elections.
