Kannur, March 20: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his wife Kamala have declared assets totaling over ₹1 crore, according to the affidavit submitted with their nomination papers for the Dharmadam constituency. The elections in Kerala are set for April 9, where 140 new legislators will be elected.
The affidavit reveals that Vijayan holds ₹43.35 lakh in deposits, while Kamala has ₹60.58 lakh. Additionally, Vijayan owns 78 cents of land, and Kamala possesses 17.5 cents in Onchiyam. They also have 10 sovereigns of gold jewelry. Notably, neither Vijayan nor Kamala has any liabilities.
However, it is worth mentioning that three criminal cases are pending against Vijayan, although he has not been convicted in any of them.
Vijayan, contesting as a candidate from the Left Democratic Front (LDF), submitted his nomination at the Thalassery sub-registrar office before returning officer Sachin Krishna. He was accompanied by senior CPI(M) leaders, including E.P. Jayarajan, A.N. Shamsir, and K.K. Ragesh.
This marks Vijayan’s seventh election campaign, showcasing his political journey spanning over five decades. He first entered the electoral fray in 1970 at the age of 25 from Kuthupuramba, winning the seat three times before representing Payyanur and subsequently Dharmadam, where he is now contesting for the third consecutive time.
While the nomination process is routine, the contest in Dharmadam is considered significant as Vijayan aims to maintain his political stronghold in this crucial election. His candidacy has become the focal point of the LDF’s campaign, with the Chief Minister seeking to bolster support in a constituency that has been a bastion for his party in recent elections.
After filing his nomination, Vijayan briefly spoke to the media, stating that he would address election-related questions later. He then left to participate in election events in Dharmadam, with plans to visit Malappuram later in the day as part of his campaign.
