Pathanamthitta, March 23: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has firmly rejected Congress’s claims of a secret agreement between the CPI(M) and the BJP. He stated on Monday that these allegations stem from the UDF’s fear of losing the upcoming elections. Vijayan asserted that the BJP will not secure any seats in Kerala during the assembly elections scheduled for April 9.
As the election campaign intensifies, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has made this alleged “deal” a central issue of their campaign. The UDF aims to prevent minority votes from shifting towards the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). Congress claims that CPI(M) is covertly aiding the BJP by fielding weak candidates in select constituencies, thereby allowing the saffron party to strengthen its foothold in the state.
Vijayan countered these accusations, labeling them baseless. He pointed out that historically, it has been Congress that has formed alliances with the BJP. He referenced the well-known Congress-League and BJP coalition in Kerala politics, claiming that several years ago, an RSS leader admitted to receiving support from Congress in various regions. According to Vijayan, similar cooperation was observed in recent local body elections.
He emphasized that the BJP’s growth in Kerala has been very limited. While there has been a slight increase in their vote share, the party will fail to convert this into seats. Vijayan expressed confidence that the LDF would secure a third consecutive term and increase its seat count. He also noted that there is no anti-incumbency wave in the state.
This statement adds fuel to the already heated electoral atmosphere, where both the LDF and UDF are accusing each other of colluding with the BJP. The BJP is also making efforts to enhance its presence in Kerala, which the LDF denies.
However, Congress has labeled the alleged secret alliance between CPI(M) and BJP as a significant threat to secular votes. Political experts suggest that this accusation is an extension of the narrative previously raised by Rahul Gandhi regarding the CPI(M)-BJP connection. It has now been intensified just before the elections, as the competition is expected to be fierce.
CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan launched a personal attack on opposition leader V.D. Satheesan, accusing him of spreading falsehoods to conceal internal conflicts within the UDF. As the campaign heats up, the issue of a deal or secret agreement has become the biggest controversy. Leaders from both sides are attempting to sway voters through these accusations. It remains to be seen how effective Congress’s narrative will be on the public or how robust LDF’s response will prove. This question could significantly impact the results of Kerala’s 2026 assembly elections.
