Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, the Kartik Swami Temple is situated along the Rudraprayag-Pokhari route, near Kanakchauri village. A pleasant three-kilometer trek from Kanakchauri village leads visitors to the temple’s enchanting beauty. Perched atop a hill, devotees must undertake a long trek to reach the temple. During the journey, the hills of Uttarakhand appear almost heavenly. Although rituals and worship are held during the monsoon and Shivratri, the temple sees fluctuating numbers of tourists and devotees due to its challenging access.
Numerous mythological legends surround the Kartik Swami Temple. It is believed that Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, retreated to the hills after feeling hurt by a competition with Lord Ganesha. In an act of love, sacrifice, and devotion, he relinquished his body to prove his commitment to his parents. This is why the temple does not house an idol; instead, worship is offered to a naturally formed stone, regarded as the remains of Lord Kartikeya.
The temple’s history spans approximately 200 years. Though small, the faith of its devotees makes the arduous journey worthwhile. One of the temple’s highlights is the evening aarti, during which numerous bells are rung simultaneously, filling the mountains with the sound of devotion. Visitors are advised to exercise caution during the snowfall season, but the temple remains open year-round.
