Bengaluru, August 13: Former MP Prasanna Revanna has been moved from a VIP cell to a general barrack in Bengaluru Central Jail after a mobile phone was discovered in his cell.
The situation escalated on Wednesday evening when a 17-second video allegedly surfaced on social media. In the video, Prasanna is seen talking on a mobile phone inside the barrack. However, the authenticity of the video has not been confirmed, and the jail administration has yet to issue an official statement.
In the purported video, Prasanna is dressed in colorful attire instead of the mandated prison uniform. He can be heard saying that he made a call two days prior. The emergence of this video has raised new concerns regarding the use of mobile phones within the prison.
Following the discovery of the mobile phone, Prasanna has been relocated to a barrack housing around 20 other inmates, all sharing a single toilet facility. He has also been instructed to wear the prison’s mandatory uniform and to work in the jail library.
This incident comes just one day before the assembly’s monsoon session. The opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular), have declared that they will not allow assembly proceedings to continue until Planning and Statistics Minister B. Nagendra resigns.
Recently, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) conducted a raid at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, claiming to have recovered a mobile phone and a pen drive from Prasanna’s cell. The seized items included a blue Redmi 5G mobile phone, a charger, a blue pocket notebook, and a black SanDisk pen drive. Reports indicate that explicit videos were found on the mobile and pen drive.
As a result, Prasanna was transferred from the VIP cell, where he had been residing with another undertrial prisoner, Pratap Rai, who is allegedly assisting him.
Meanwhile, Karnataka’s Home Minister Priyank Kharge stated on Wednesday that he personally ordered the CCB raid at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail. More than ten mobile phones were recovered during the operation, including one from Prasanna Revanna’s cell.
According to police, the mobile phone found in Prasanna’s cell contained several OTT apps. The DGP of the jail department, Alok Kumar, announced that Assistant Superintendent Iranna has been suspended due to negligence, while Jail Superintendent Anshukumar has received a show-cause notice.
Alok Kumar confirmed that a mobile phone and charger were recovered from Prasanna’s barrack, and several OTT applications were found on the device. He also mentioned that an investigation would determine whether the jail’s Wi-Fi network had been misused.
