Bengaluru, March 17: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has criticized the Railways department for abruptly cancelling examinations meant for the promotion of railway employees. This decision came after Kannada organizations protested against the lack of an option for employees to take the exams in Kannada.
Siddaramaiah stated that the exams for 194 Goods Train Manager positions in the South Western Railway and 101 Limited Departmental Competitive Exams (LDCE) in the Hubli division were suddenly cancelled. This has led to confusion and concern among Kannada-speaking employees.
He noted that thousands of Kannada-speaking railway staff had previously expressed their discontent over being denied the opportunity to take the exam in their language, but the Railways department ignored their peaceful protests and appeals from various organizations.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the abrupt cancellation of the exams has created difficulties for Kannada employees. He argued that if the Railways department had recognized the issue earlier and allowed the exams to be conducted in Kannada, this situation could have been avoided. He condemned the department for disregarding the concerns of Kannada employees.
Siddaramaiah also accused several central departments of discriminating against Kannada job seekers, claiming that the central policy prioritizes only Hindi. He stated that Kannada speakers have repeatedly raised their voices for justice. The Chief Minister expressed disappointment that this issue arose while Karnataka’s V. Somanna serves as the Railway Minister. He described it as extremely unfortunate that the Railways department has adopted an anti-Kannada stance, resulting in injustice to Karnataka and its Kannada-speaking population.
He urged Somanna to stand up for Kannada speakers and assist in resolving this issue. Siddaramaiah called on the central government to ensure that future examinations do not discriminate against candidates based on language.
The Chief Minister also requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and direct the relevant departments to take strict action. He insisted that the cancelled railway exams be conducted as soon as possible, with candidates given the option to take the exams in Kannada.
