The BJP holds all six assembly seats in Unnao, making it a critical area as political parties gear up for the 2027 elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Unnao, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : Political preparations are intensifying in Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming 2027 assembly elections. With all major parties vying for every seat, the Unnao district has emerged as a focal point due to its six assembly constituencies.
The six constituencies in Unnao include Bangarmau, Safipur, Mohan, Unnao Sadar, Bhagwant Nagar, and Purwa. Currently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) holds all these seats, establishing the district as a stronghold for the party. The sitting legislators are Shrikant Katiyar from Bangarmau, Bamba Lal Diwakar from Safipur, Brijesh Kumar Rawat from Mohan, Pankaj Gupta from Unnao Sadar, Ashutosh Shukla from Bhagwant Nagar, and Anil Kumar Singh from Purwa.
Covering an area of 4,558 square kilometers, Unnao has a population of 3,108,367 according to the 2011 census. The district is administratively divided into six tehsils, 16 development blocks, 1,044 gram panchayats, and 18 municipalities, supported by 21 police stations to maintain law and order. The literacy rate stands at 66.37%, with a gender ratio of 907 females for every 1,000 males.
Named after its headquarters, the city of Unnao, the region was once densely forested. Approximately 1,200 years ago, Godo Singh of the Chauhan Rajput clan cleared these forests to establish a settlement, originally named Savai Godo, which later became Unnao. Historically, this area was part of the Kosala kingdom and subsequently included in the Awadh province.
Archaeological remnants found in various locations, including Ramkot village in the Bangarmau pargana, testify to the area’s ancient history. Following the 1857-58 revolt against British rule, Unnao was designated as an independent district, officially taking its current shape in 1869 when Unnao city was declared a municipality.
Unnao is renowned for its tanning industry, being the second-largest leather hub in Uttar Pradesh after Kanpur.
In terms of connectivity, Unnao is well-positioned with major highways such as NH-31, NH-27, SH-38, and SH-58 linking it to cities like Lucknow, Kanpur, Raebareli, and Noida. Unnao Junction serves as the primary railway station, offering regular services to major cities across the country. For air travel, residents utilize Kanpur Airport and Lucknow’s Amausi Airport.
Culturally, Unnao is known for the Takia Mela, a symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity celebrated annually. Nature enthusiasts can visit the Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary, formerly known as Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary, located along the Kanpur-Lucknow highway. This sanctuary attracts over 250 species of migratory birds, including those from Siberia and CIS countries, and features facilities like a deer park, watchtower, and boating options.
