
New Delhi, 5 January – Kapil Dev, counted among India’s greatest all-rounders, led the country to its first Cricket World Cup title. Known for his fast bowling and aggressive batting, Kapil Dev inspired immense confidence within the Indian team.
Born on 6 January 1959 in Chandigarh, Kapil Dev Ram Lal Nikhanj grabbed attention with his outstanding performances in domestic cricket. He got his debut opportunity in One Day Internationals in October 1978 and soon after made his Test debut, both against Pakistan.
In only his third Test match against Pakistan, Kapil Dev scored India’s fastest Test fifty off 33 balls. During the 1979-80 home series against Pakistan, he demonstrated his all-round skills by taking 32 wickets and scoring 278 runs, helping India win the six-match series 2-0.
Famous for his pace and swing bowling, Kapil Dev was known for match-winning innings as well. Besides his fast bowling and aggressive batting, he was also recognised as an exceptional fielder.
On 18 June 1983, in a World Cup match, Kapil Dev played a crucial unbeaten innings of 175 runs. India had lost five wickets for just 103 runs, and the top five batsmen had failed to reach double figures. It seemed India was headed for a defeat, but Kapil Dev’s 138-ball knock, including six sixes and sixteen fours, helped India reach 266 for 8 in 60 overs.
In response, Zimbabwe was bowled out for 235 in 57 overs. Kapil Dev also took one wicket for 32 runs in 11 overs. He was named Player of the Match, although the game was not televised due to a BBC strike. Under his captaincy, India lifted the World Cup trophy.
Kapil Dev played 131 Test matches, scoring 5,248 runs at an average of 31.05 and taking 434 wickets. In 225 ODIs, he scored 3,783 runs and claimed 253 wickets. His first-class career includes 11,356 runs with 18 centuries and 434 wickets, while in 310 List A matches, he scored 5,481 runs and took 335 wickets. He was the first player in Test history to achieve the double of 5,000 runs and 400 wickets.
For his outstanding contributions to cricket, Kapil Dev received the Arjuna Award in 1979-80 and the Padma Shri in 1982. He was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1983 and honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1991. In 2008, the Indian Territorial Army awarded him the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Later, in 2010, he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and received the CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.
