New Delhi, September 3: Shahrukh Khan, the batsman for Gujarat Titans, has commended Shubman Gill’s growth as a leader. He described Gill, captain of India’s Test and ODI teams, as a highly intelligent and strategic thinker who is always focused on the game.
Having shared the dressing room with Gill, Shahrukh has witnessed the young batsman’s journey from an emerging leader in the IPL to becoming the captain of the national team. He noted that while Gill’s leadership qualities may not always be apparent from the outside, they are clear to teammates who train with him daily.
In a special interview, Shahrukh stated, “It’s evident that he has progressed significantly from leading Gujarat Titans to captaining the national Test team. I don’t need to highlight how good a captain he is. We saw his captaincy during the series in England, where he was aggressive whenever the team needed it. Sharing the dressing room with him has been a great experience, as he understands the players very well.”
Considering the responsibility he has at a young age, Gill’s advancement is crucial. Shahrukh believes one of his greatest leadership strengths is his strategic understanding. He remarked, “He is a very strategic thinker. It may not seem so from the outside. However, as teammates, when you see him practice and play matches daily, his mind is always working on what to do next. He has many options in his mind and often chooses the right one. Playing under his captaincy is a delightful experience.”
Shahrukh’s comments come after a challenging IPL 2026 season for him. Although Gujarat Titans retained him for ₹4 crores, he struggled to make an impact and was dropped from the playing eleven midway through the season.
He added, “The IPL is the biggest and best T20 league in the world. Being part of it for the past 6-7 years has been a matter of pride for me. Playing here offers players a lot of learning opportunities, as the best players and coaches from around the world participate. Every young player dreams of performing well in the IPL to represent their country. Some seasons in my career have been great, while others not so much, but I have tried to learn from every experience.” He acknowledged that T20 cricket is highly unpredictable, which is why, despite challenges in the IPL, he excelled in the Tamil Nadu Premier League, leading his team to victory.
He further stated, “As a player, the more you engage with the game and understand it, the more you recognize its ups and downs. You can’t always be overly excited or constantly disappointed. It’s essential to maintain a balance, and I feel fortunate to be part of it.” While Shahrukh has primarily focused on domestic cricket, his connection with Gill and Gujarat Titans has been a significant aspect of his IPL experience.
