Kamalpreet Kaur: A Beacon of Inspiration for Women Athletes

New Delhi, March 4: Kamalpreet Kaur emerged as a standout name during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the discus throw event. She made a remarkable impact by securing a spot in the finals with a throw of 64 meters, becoming the first Indian woman to reach this stage in discus throw. However, her journey has been filled with challenges.

From a young age, Kamalpreet showed a keen interest in sports, actively participating in school competitions. Her consistent performance helped her talent shine. Despite facing financial difficulties at home and her mother’s reluctance for her to pursue sports, Kamalpreet received unwavering support from her father, Kuldeep Singh, a farmer. Initially, she aimed to try her luck in shot put, but after joining the Sports Authority of India (SAI), she decided to focus on a career in discus throw.

Kamalpreet began competing at the district level, where her skills continued to develop. In 2013, she participated in the Under-18 National Championship, finishing in second place. The following year, she became the junior champion after joining SAI. By 2016, Kamalpreet had won her first national title, breaking the national record with a throw of 65.06 meters.

She has also represented India in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Championships. Kamalpreet’s achievements demonstrate that Indian women can compete at a global level in track and field events. Her dedication, confidence, and relentless practice have made her a formidable competitor on the international stage.

During the pandemic, Kamalpreet faced a tough time, even slipping into depression. To cope, she began playing cricket in her village. Her impressive performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics helped her gain international recognition and set an example for girls across the country. She embodies the message that with clear goals and genuine effort, any milestone can be achieved.
