Itanagar, February 17: A joint operation involving the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and local civil administration continues for the fifth day to extinguish a severe forest fire that broke out in the remote Walong area of Arunachal Pradesh on February 13.

Efforts to control the fire have significantly progressed due to rapid coordination and continuous work, despite challenging weather conditions and the difficult terrain requiring 24-hour operations.

Troops from the Spear Corps of the Indian Army have played a crucial role in this operation. They are conducting aerial surveys in collaboration with Indian Air Force helicopters and deploying water drops where necessary to manage the blaze. Heavy machinery, specialized firefighting equipment, and a large number of personnel are being utilized to prevent the flames from spreading. Continuous monitoring and patrolling are being carried out to prevent re-ignition in the affected areas after the fire has been extinguished.

On the fifth day of the operation, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 2 Mountain Division personally visited the affected area. He assessed the progress of firefighting efforts and praised the soldiers for their dedication, bravery, and swift response. The GOC noted that this joint initiative has not only been successful in controlling the fire but has also sent a strong message of safety and support to the local community.

He reported that the spread of the fire has been largely contained and the situation is under control, although vigilance remains essential.

This operation exemplifies the growing coordination between armed forces and civil administration in addressing natural disasters in Arunachal Pradesh’s border areas. In challenging locations like Walong, where access and operations are difficult, the collaboration between the army, air force, and local administration is crucial for protecting lives and property.

Local residents have also expressed appreciation for these efforts, stating that the presence of soldiers has provided them with reassurance.
