Srinagar, May 20: The Jammu and Kashmir Police announced on Wednesday that they have successfully destroyed illegal opium cultivation in Baramulla district as part of their ‘Drug-Free Campaign.’
A police officer reported that this operation is part of the ongoing ‘Nasha Mukht Bharat Abhiyan’ aimed at combating drug abuse and illegal drug cultivation. The Baramulla police acted on credible information regarding illegal opium farming in the village of Pariswani, Kunzar.
Initial investigations revealed that the land belonged to Ahmad Reshi, son of Abdul Rahim Reshi, a resident of Pariswani, where the illegal cultivation was taking place.
Upon receiving this information, the local police station registered FIR number 62/2026 under Section 8/18 of the NDPS Act and initiated an investigation. During the inquiry, the illegal opium plants were destroyed on-site, strictly following legal procedures in the presence of a magistrate and officials from the excise, revenue, and agriculture departments.
Samples of the seized plants were collected, sealed, and taken into custody for further legal action. The Baramulla police remain committed to eliminating the threat of drugs and appeal to the public to assist in curbing drug trafficking and illegal cultivation in the district.
As part of the ongoing 100-day ‘Nasha Mukht Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan,’ police are conducting a vigorous campaign against drugs across the union territory. This initiative aims to protect future generations from addiction, and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has termed it a ‘war against narco-terrorism.’
While launching the ‘Nasha Mukht Jammu and Kashmir Abhiyan’ on April 6, LG Manoj Sinha stated that recent punitive measures against drug traffickers include the cancellation of passports, Aadhaar cards, and driving licenses, as well as the seizure of properties acquired through drug trade.
The LG is visiting every district in the union territory, leading marches against drugs to ensure that the administration and society work together to free the youth from addiction.
