Jammu and Kashmir Increases Retirement Age for Judicial Officers to 62

Srinagar, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : The Jammu and Kashmir government has officially raised the retirement age for judicial officers from 60 to 62 years. This decision, announced on October 6, aligns with directives from the Supreme Court.

According to a government order issued by the Department of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, the Supreme Court had instructed state governments and Union Territories to consider extending the retirement age for judicial officers after consultations with the relevant High Court. This directive stemmed from the case of “All India Judges Association and Others” versus others, which was referenced in Supreme Court orders dated July 22 and August 5, 2026.

The court specified that any agreement to increase the retirement age would take effect from March 31, 2026. This includes judicial officers who retired on or after that date, provided all conditions are met.

The order stated, “In compliance with the directives, consultations were held with the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court regarding this matter.” The Registrar General had communicated the full court’s recommendation to raise the retirement age during a meeting on August 10, contingent upon the officers being deemed fit and competent to continue working beyond 60.

The Finance Department expressed its agreement through an informal note dated September 9, and the Cabinet approved the proposal on September 22, 2026.

The order concluded, “Accordingly, the retirement age will be increased to 62 years from March 31, 2026. This approval is subject to assessments of fitness, eligibility, performance, and continued utility in service, with necessary amendments to the relevant rules to be made in consultation with the High Court.”
