Jammu and Kashmir CM Announces Compensation for Families of Victims in Kulgam Terror Attack

Srinagar, August 1: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the recent terrorist attack in Kulgam district’s Kellam village. He announced compensation for the affected families.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah, President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah strongly condemned the brutal killings of two external laborers in the Devsar area of Kulgam. They expressed, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s families and pray that they find the strength and courage to endure this irreparable loss. Targeting vulnerable individuals is a completely inhumane act that must be condemned in the strongest terms.”

The Chief Minister declared a compensation of ₹10 lakh for each of the deceased’s families from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. This amount is in addition to the immediate assistance of ₹6 lakh provided by the district administration. He expressed deep sympathy for the affected families and assured them that the government stands firmly with them during this difficult time.

On Friday evening, terrorists shot at two laborers working at a brick kiln in Kellam village, severely injuring them. Both injured workers were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag, where Deepak Ratre (24) succumbed to his injuries. Doctors referred the critically injured Bopinder (28) for specialized treatment.

Officials reported that Bopinder was transferred in critical condition from the Government Medical College in Anantnag to the Super Specialty Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Soura, Srinagar. Unfortunately, he passed away during treatment on Saturday morning.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha wrote on X, “A laborer from Chhattisgarh lost his life in the brutal terrorist attack in Kulgam. I spoke with DGP Nalin Prabhat and top security officials. I strongly condemn this cowardly act. I have directed security forces to intensify their operations and eliminate terrorists. Jammu and Kashmir Police and security forces have cordoned off the area and initiated operations to bring the culprits to justice. Another injured laborer from Chhattisgarh was rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment. My heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family, and I pray for the quick recovery of the injured. The Jammu and Kashmir administration and the entire nation stand with these families.”
