New Delhi, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed serious concerns on Tuesday regarding the escalating situation in the Red Sea region, following recent attacks between Yemen’s Houthi group and Saudi Arabia.
During a media briefing in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India’s External Affairs Minister met with his Saudi counterpart during the BRICS summit. They discussed various issues, including the Houthi insurgency. Jaiswal condemned the recent attacks on Saudi Arabia and emphasized India’s worry about the deteriorating conditions in the Red Sea area.
He stated, “We have condemned the attacks on Saudi territory, which targeted civilian infrastructure and economic assets. Such actions undermine stability in the region and threaten the freedom of navigation through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. These actions are completely unacceptable to us. We hope for a swift restoration of peace and stability, as we rely on energy supplies from that part of the world.”
The Houthi group claimed on Monday that it launched dozens of ballistic missiles and drones at a major military airbase in southwestern Saudi Arabia. This marks a significant escalation in cross-border tensions.
In a statement aired on Houthi-controlled Al-Masirah TV, military spokesperson Yahya Saree reported that the group targeted the King Khalid Air Base located in Khamis Mushait, near the Yemen border. The operation aimed at fighter-jet hangars, radar systems, runways, munitions depots, and other military facilities. He claimed that the attacks were “precise and direct,” resulting in substantial damage.
India has previously condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, particularly those targeting civilians and economic sites, labeling them as “unacceptable.”
