New Delhi, August 4: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister, Sayedov Bakhtiyar Odilovich, and his delegation in New Delhi on Monday. He expressed confidence that this meeting would significantly contribute to strengthening the ties between the two nations. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations.
Jaishankar emphasized that Uzbekistan is a vital part of India’s extended neighborhood. There has always been a continuous exchange of people, ideas, and trade between the two countries. The roots of our relationship are deeply intertwined with history and culture.
He noted that even in modern times, there have been regular contacts at both political and institutional levels. It is encouraging to see our relationship progressing steadily. There is a close dialogue between our leaders, and our Prime Minister holds special respect for your President.
According to Jaishankar, the scope of bilateral relations has expanded significantly over the years. Today, these relations span various sectors, including construction, digital technology, energy, health, and education, with aspirations to extend into the mining sector as well. Currently, trade between the two nations is around one billion dollars, and there is confidence that this figure should increase.
The External Affairs Minister also announced the formation of the India-Uzbekistan Parliamentary Friendship Group. He expressed hope that regular dialogue among our representatives would further strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
On the level of foreign policy, he mentioned that as developing nations, both countries share similar views on many international and regional issues, particularly concerning terrorism, extremism, and drug trafficking. We collaborate on several bilateral and multilateral platforms, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Jaishankar expressed deep appreciation for the stance taken by the Uzbek government and people against all forms of terrorism. While both nations face their own challenges, they have adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards activities that harbor terrorism and cross-border terrorism.
He added that India is currently chairing BRICS this year. He expressed gratitude for Uzbekistan’s cooperation in BRICS activities and initiatives. Additionally, he assured Uzbekistan of India’s support for its presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) from 2027 to 2029.
