New Delhi, February 24: Former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh and Leader of the Opposition, Jairam Thakur, met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on Tuesday. During the meeting, they discussed the current economic situation of Himachal Pradesh and various financial issues related to the state’s overall development.

Thakur expressed gratitude for the continuous support provided by the central government to Himachal Pradesh. He emphasized that the assistance from the center is crucial for the balanced and sustainable development of the state, which faces challenging geographical conditions. He urged for maximum financial aid for the state’s financial stability, infrastructure development, disaster relief, and various developmental projects.

The Leader of the Opposition stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the central government is fully attentive to the interests of Himachal Pradesh and will continue to provide necessary support. He presented data indicating that the assistance received by Himachal Pradesh during Modi’s tenure is unprecedented compared to the last 70 years. He noted that the state’s participation in 191 centrally sponsored schemes, following the grant of special status, is only 10 percent, with the remaining costs borne entirely by the central government.

Thakur highlighted that the development of infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh, including national highways, four-lane roads, world-class tunnels, and railway networks, is being facilitated by the central government. Prime Minister Modi has consistently stated that better connectivity and infrastructure lay the foundation for a better future. The unprecedented development in connectivity and infrastructure, aided by the center, is benefiting the entire state. He assured that he will continue to advocate for the rights and needs of Himachal Pradesh effectively before the central government.

He also mentioned that the central government has provided ₹3,000 crores through External Assistance Projects (EAP) to Himachal Pradesh, which includes a project worth ₹1,617 crores for strengthening health facilities under the JICA scheme. Of this, ₹1,294 crores will be provided as a loan by JICA, with ₹1,165 crores covered by the central government. This funding will improve facilities in five medical colleges and 86 health institutions in Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, a World Bank project for disaster reconstruction worth ₹1,992 crores has been approved, with the central government contributing ₹1,792 crores.
